Context
Reception across Southeast Asia is inconsistent, and choppy video calls are a daily reality. Google Duo wanted to position itself as the app with the most reliable call quality among competitors.
Idea
The campaign pokes fun at video-call disasters, frozen faces, chopped-off sentences; using wordplay and local catchphrases to twist real phrases into accidental, hilarious mix-ups caused entirely by lag.
We took the joke into cinemas: pre-film ads featuring well-known local celebrities pretended to spoil the ending of the movie audiences were about to watch. Except the "spoiler" was deliberately garbled, cut off, or misheard, mimicking a bad video call in real time.
The campaign leaned on the deep local nuance of three well-known celebrity pairs, using each duo's existing chemistry and dynamic to make the mix-up stories land even harder. The prank turned a universal annoyance into a laugh, and made Duo's promise of a clear video call the thing everyone was talking about.

The Films
Using the same video call miscommunication formula, we decided to prank audience on ground in cinema theatres by making casual banter to sound like movie spoilers. We picked four latest movies and put the ads in the right cinemas.
